Destiny 2 developer Bungie, recently made a number of big announcements with regards to their online multiplayer first person shooter. Starting on September 17, Destiny 2 will become free to play. The new free to play version will be know as Destiny 2: New Light and will include all of the “Year One” content that was released.

This move comes as Destiny 2 has been lagging behind many of the other games in the genre. By making Destiny 2 Free to play, Bungie hopes to reverse this trend of losing players. One reason for loss of players may be the requirement of having to purchase older content to gain access to new expansions. Now that Destiny 2 is free, players will have access to the main/core game while new expansions will be paid for content.

The game will also become cross-platform, making characters from their account available to them across different platforms. For now this will be available for the PC, Xbox One and PS4 versions. The game will also be available on Google’s upcoming cloud gaming platform, Stadia. This will make the game playable in Google Chrome. The cloud gaming service will launch in November 2019, Destiny 2 will be one of the debut titles available. In addition, there will no longer be any platform exclusive content such as weapons, armor or maps.

Bungie also recently took over publishing rights from Activision. These changes appear to be a result of ending that partnership. Destiny 2 will no longer be available through Battle.net and will move over to Steam starting on October 1st. Players will have the ability migrate purchases over to Steam for free. They will also keep their character’s achievements and progress.
